Situations Vacant presents THE SITCOM TRIALS

The Situations Vacant Sitcom Trials is a live stage show, presenting excerpts from new situation comedies, and allowing the audience to judge which - if any - they'd like to see more of.

A new series of The Sitcom Trials begins at The Comedy Pub in London on Monday Jan 15th 2001, and runs monthly.

If you are a comedy writer or performer who would like to participate in this next production, and to be considered for the subsequent productions in the series, here is what to do:

STEP ONE - Join the Sits Vac eGroup. This will give you daily information on developments, and an opportunity to exchange ideas and information with your fellow Sits Vac sitcom creators. Click here to join eGroup. When the brief goes out for new submissions to Sitcom Trials, you will be the fisrt to receive it and will be able to vote on the selection of scripts.

STEP TWO - PERFORMERS (or writer/performers) who will be available to perform in our shows, please make yourself known. You will need to be able too attend the meetings and rehearsals in London preceding each show, details will be sent you via the egroup.

All performers agree to have their perfomance webcast by British Web Broadcasting and will be asked to sign a release form to this effect.

STEP THREE - WRITERS. First of all - WAIT. Do not send any scripts yet. First join the egroup. Then you will be invited to submit your scripts. Although the requirements differ with every show, there are usually the following rules: The scripts must be no more than 10 minutes long, and must be written or tailored for three (four max) of our available cast . All scripts are performed in radio style, with actors stood at microphones clutching their scripts - so there can be no TV-style visuals or camera directions, and we don't read out stage directions. Your script will be intended as a taster of your proposed sitcom, inviting the audience to beg to see more. Writer-performers can offer sitcoms created for themselves alone and need not offer to perform in other writers' scripts.

All submitted scripts are read and considered subject to the Sits Vac TERMS & CONDITIONS and all contributing writers will be assumed to have read and agreed to these terms. (Click to see terms)

STEP FOUR - SELECTION AND CASTING. Scripts are selected to be performed in the Sitcom Trials by the members of the Sits Vac Egroup, and the producer and by voting at read-throughs. Scripts for the performance are distributed via email to all performers.

STEP FIVE - THE SITCOM TRIALS. The show is performed in front of a paying audience, including a large number of representatives from the TV and radio industry. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to make them laugh. They will also be asked to fill in questionnaires giving their candid opinions on what they've seen.

STEP SIX - WEBCAST. The entire evening is recorded for webcast by British Web Broadcasting. The most successful productions from the night will be edited down into a series of three minute excerpts for viewers to vote on.

STEP SEVEN - FURTHER DEVELOPMENT. Popular scripts are developed into further episodes, and promising projects are developed through team writing. In the meantime the eGroup and online viewers continue to vote on what should be included in the next Sitcom Trials. And so on till we're sick of the idea.

And that's it. So what are you waiting for? Join that eGroup and get writing!

Kev F Sutherland, Producer, Situations Vacant sitcom.
